Spacious, welcoming, and filled with warmth and light, Milkwood captures the essence of relaxed coastal living. This charming Cape Country Beach House has a calming atmosphere that flows effortlessly between indoors and outdoors, inviting nature right into the heart of the home.

Throughout the house, beautiful paintings — many depicting South African life and landscapes — add personality and a sense of place. The generous open-plan living area features large stacking doors that can be opened in different combinations, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the magnificent gardens. On calm days, you can open the house on all sides to enjoy the gentle sea breeze while connecting the rear deck directly to the living space. The sunroom, with its large bay window seat, is stocked with board games, cards and puzzles. A wood-burning stove creates a comfortable, cosy atmosphere on a chilly night.

Milkwood offers four bedrooms, each designed for privacy and comfort. Three are located in separate wings of the main house, each with its own bathroom, either en-suite or directly adjacent. The fourth bedroom is set apart in the garden with its own entrance and bathroom —perfect for guests who enjoy extra privacy.

For entertainment, the house includes a games room complete with a bar, TV, pool table, dart board and various lawn games, including a boule set and croquet. There are also boogie boards available for guests of all ages. Set apart from the main house next to the fourth bedroom, the games room offers a great spot for entertainment without disturbing those relaxing inside.

A separate study provides an ideal setup for remote work or longer stays.

There are three outdoor entertainment areas – two north-facing sunny decks on the mountainside (one with a retractable awning) and a covered terrace on the seaside. Each is furnished for comfort and relaxation and provides dining flexibility depending on the wind. Two charcoal Weber braais are provided for convenience. Additionally, there is a large deck upstairs (accessed through the 2 bedrooms) offering breathtaking sunset views over the ocean and star-filled skies with no light pollution.

The large, well-established, indigenous garden with its mature trees, shrubs and wide lawn offers space for outdoor play or simply soaking up the coastal tranquillity.

– The house name, Milkwood, pays tribute to the ancient milkwood trees that line the coastline between Jock’s Bay and Dawidskraal – accessible via a footpath just across the dirt road – and to the milkwoods in the garden. Wander through the shaded milkwood forest to reach the beach. Within a 5-minute amble to the left, discover the shells and soft white sands of the intimate Shelly Beach and the sheltered Jock’s Bay Beach adjacent, perfect for swimming, snorkelling and family picnics. Directly in front of the house, the rockpools invite exploration at low tide. A spectacular 45-minute stroll to the right, across the Dawidskraal river mouth (ankle deep with stepping stones) and along the scenic coastal path and long stretch of secluded sandy beach, will lead you to Betty’s Bay Main Beach. Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens is a 7-minute walk away and features a wide array of fynbos and trails, including one that leads to the Disa Kloof waterfall.
