Seascape Cottage
A warm welcome to you from Ellen, Lucille & the Be in Betty’s Bay team
Having lived here for over 10 years, we’re excited to share our beautiful village and some useful tips to help you make the most of your stay.
Betty’s Bay is part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and home to one of the richest fynbos areas in the Western Cape. Please help protect this unique environment by being cautious with fires, reducing your footprint and respecting wildlife.
We value the peace and tranquillity of Betty’s Bay and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Enjoy your stay!

Alarm remote:
To arm and disarm: Use the blue button on the remote to arm and disarm the alarm
Stay & Sleep function: Press 5 on the key pad, until the “stay armed” and the number 3 show up on the screen. The number 3 should show up automatically. This is for when you are in the house and want the external beams and the front door to be armed. If it does not automatically go to the number 3, press the 5 key until it shows the number 3. The beams are then on. To turn off the stay or sleep function, use the code 1370.
Please note, there are beams on the veranda and in the garden so you should not put the alarm on if you want to move in and out. The red button is a panic button.
The blue LED light outside the front door will tell you if the alarm is on. The alarm should only be armed once everyone is clear of the beam by the front door and the car is outside the gate, otherwise, the alarm could be triggered.
THIS IS A HIGH FIRE RISK AREA
- Don’t flick cigarette butts or bottle tops anywhere in the garden or over balconies or around braai areas.
- Please don’t leave fires unattended and extinguish coals after your braai. Make 100% sure the coals are out before going to bed.
- Be aware of strong wind – Don’t braai in very windy conditions

General notes:
- All windows and doors must be locked and the alarm set whenever you leave the house.
- NO day visitors allowed.
- Baboons roam the area – ensure that windows and external doors are locked when not physically present in the room – baboons can gain access through the smallest gaps. Do not tempt baboons by leaving fresh produce, eggs, baked goods, etc, in full view.
- NO SMOKING allowed anywhere inside the house.
- Don’t flick cigarette butts or bottle tops anywhere in the garden or over balconies or around braai areas.
- Nappies MUST be bagged and discarded in the garbage bin – do not flush nappies.
- Please don’t remove internal keys and please leve them where you found them.
- Leave furniture the way you found it.
- Don’t leave the outside pillows out in windy conditions.
- Rubbish MUST be bagged – The municipality will not empty wheelie bins with loose rubbish.
- The house operates on a septic tank system and blockages can occur easily. Avoid flushing anything that wasn’t consumed.

Please manage your garbage
When you check out, please leave your garbage in a secure wheelie bin. If a bin is not available, please leave it in the house/garage for us to dispose of, or drop it off across the road from our office at the Municipal dump on your way out.
Here for a longer stay? – Garbage collection day is on a Wednesday (Tuesday for Sunny Seas between Herold Porter and Kleinmond). You can take it out when the garbage guys come past, but please don’t leave it outside.
Notes applying to this house:
- The path to the beach is right in front of the cottage.
- The waste water is processed in a natural microbial system. Only toilet paper can be flushed down the toilets and no strong chemicals should be used when washing clothes or dishes.
- Please put coffee grounds in the bin or garden, not down sinks or toilet.
- The geyser is solar/electric. Please don’t change settings on the key pad in the pantry.
- Refuse should only be put in the outside bin if it is in a black bag.
- A map showing local hiking trails and other areas of interest is in the bookshelf.
- Life savers are stationed on the left side of the beach during school holidays.
- The games and books are for your use but please don’t take them out of the cottage.
- Be careful of the step in the entrance hall – it has been highlighted with a white line.
- Please treat the dining room and garden chairs with care. They are strong but cannot handle rough treatment.
- If you bring more than one car, it is possible to park one car behind the other without blocking the driveway.
- Betty’s Bay is a highly fire prone area. A portable gas braai and canister have been provided on the table outside. Please do not make any fires; use the gas hob or braai.
- There is a spare gas canister for the stove at the back of the house. Should the gas run out, please switch over to the spare canister. Please let Be in Betty’s Bay know if any gas canister runs out so they can arrange for the empty canister to be replaced.
- Some sliding windows have been provided with wooden battens so that you can restrict the amount they can open if you wish. If you want the window fully open, just take the wooden batten out and slide it fully open.
- Take care in the shower as the floor can become slippery when wet. Non-slip mats for use in the shower are provided should you need them.
- Please wipe up any spills on the wooden floors before they leave marks
- Please don’t walk up to the house above as this will disturb other guests and set off the beams. Those staying in this house will be able to use the driveway without setting off the beams for the cottage.
- Someone may occasionally come into the garden to water. This will be done only when absolutely necessary and so as to disturb you as little as possible. They would use the wooden gate to access the garden.
- Be aware of fire risk with strong winds. Be water wise.
- There are occasional pipe bursts and so large bottles of water have been provided for use if this happens. Otherwise, the tap water is very drinkable and of good quality.
- There is a gas heater for the lounge and oil heaters for the bedrooms. Contact BeinBB if you don’t know how to use the gas heater. Please could you make sure that the gas heater is not left on when you are not in the room. There should always be some ventilation when the gas heater is on for a longish time. There are two heating pads for cold winter nights in the chest of drawers in the main bedroom – heat in microwave only for 2 minutes.
- The cushions for the outside furniture are not all-weather cushions. Please do not leave them outside, rather bring them inside after using, as the wind comes up suddenly in Betty’s Bay.
Visiting with pets?
- Please pick up dog pooh before departure
- Make sure that your pets sleep on their own beds and will be kept off the furniture
- Don’t leave your pets unattended for long times – to prevent potential noise disturbance to neighbors
